Qld: Welfare groups back Beattie's ambulance levy

Key Queensland welfare and social groups have backed the state government's controversialnew ambulance levy.

The groups believe the levy will benefit disadvantaged and low income earners.

Queensland Council of Social Service director SHIRLEY WATTERS says such Queenslandersaren't being adequately represented in debate over the proposed $85 levy on property owners.

Ms WATTERS says she thinks the initiative of this government to move to a universalscheme that is taxpayer-funded is a good one.

The levy's been condemned by local councils which have threatened to boycott its collection.

Ms WATTERS says property owners, including young families struggling with a mortgage, are generally in a better position to pay the levy than those in rental accommodation.
